What Is the KHSAA Dead Period.. and Why Does It Matter?
Every year from June 25 to July 9, Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) rules require a two-week “dead period.” No team practices, no coach-athlete contact, and no use of school facilities.
But here’s the truth: the KHSAA dead period serves a valuable purpose.
In the past, summer meant non-stop training, travel teams, and packed calendars. Athletes rarely got a real break. Now, this rule forces everyone, players and coaches, to step back, breathe, and just enjoy being a kid again.
Whether it’s a vacation or some downtime at home, this is the perfect window for athletes and families to reset together.
How Serious Athletes Can Still Improve (Without Breaking the Rules)
The dead period doesn’t mean you can’t train. It means you have to be self-motivated.
If you’re serious about improving, this is your time to shine. You don’t need a coach or a full team to:
Get in 20–30 minutes of individual work
Maintain your physical conditioning
Play pickup or scrimmage with teammates
Work on game-speed decisions in low-pressure environments
And here's the secret: That work adds up.
It's not about overdoing it, it's about staying sharp and consistent. This is when leaders emerge and teammates notice.
Mistakes Athletes Make During the KHSAA Dead Period
Here are two big pitfalls:
1. Doing nothing
Some athletes treat this like a two-week nap from sports. But two weeks of total inactivity can absolutely wreck your conditioning. The first week back? It’ll feel like climbing a mountain with no training.
2. Doing too much
Others swing the other way and refuse to rest. But recovery matters. This is your best chance all year to let your body heal from bumps, bruises, and minor injuries.
The key? Balance. Work when your body feels good, and rest when it needs to recharge.
How to Stand Out, Even Without Coaches Around
If you're a high-character, team-first athlete, use this time to build chemistry:
Organize fun scrimmages with your teammates
Be the leader who keeps others active
Make it low-pressure, high-fun. No coaches, just good competition
Those moments carry over into the season, especially when things get tough. Teams that stay connected during the dead period often come out stronger during the season.
🧠 The Right Mindset Heading Into (and Out of) Dead Period
Let’s be real, most athletes won’t do anything during the KHSAA dead period.
That’s your opportunity.
Stay disciplined. Be intentional. The work you do on your own now will be obvious when official practices start again. Coaches can tell who put in the work.
Let your preparation be what sets you apart.
